YouTuber Dhruv Rathee was detained by Delhi Police from his residence in Gurugram on Saturday morning, October 10, ahead of the proposed Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) protest at Jantar Mantar in the national capital.

According to a report by Moneycontrol, citing News18, Rathee was staying with his family at his residence in Sector 56, Gurugram, when a team of Delhi Police arrived to take him into custody. The police team reportedly entered his house at around 7:48 am after his mother opened the door.

Around 50 police personnel had allegedly gathered outside his residence in Central Park Vihar, Sector 56, late on Thursday night before the detention, according to the report. The circumstances surrounding the action and the specific grounds for his detention were not immediately clear.

Why was Dhruv Rathee detained?

Rathee had reportedly arrived to participate in the CJP protest scheduled to take place at Jantar Mantar on Saturday. The demonstration was called to demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

The proposed protest comes amid concerns raised by the CJP over the revision of electoral rolls and alleged irregularities in the voter-list revision process. The demonstration was planned despite Delhi Police denying permission, citing procedural requirements and law-and-order concerns.

Rathee had also criticised the extensive security restrictions imposed in Delhi ahead of the protest. In a video posted on social media, he questioned the measures, which included restrictions on metro services, train cancellations and a temporary suspension of mobile internet services in parts of central Delhi.

Delhi on high alert ahead of CJP protest

Delhi has been placed under heightened security ahead of the proposed demonstration, with police personnel deployed at key locations, including routes leading to Jantar Mantar and other sensitive areas.

According to media reports, authorities have introduced multiple preventive measures to restrict unauthorised gatherings and maintain law and order. Police have also detained people attempting to reach the protest site.

The security arrangements come amid concerns over the possible impact of the gathering on traffic, public transport and essential services. The proposed demonstration has also triggered a wider debate over the right to peaceful protest and the restrictions imposed by authorities.

Further details regarding Rathee's detention, including the official grounds for the action and any subsequent developments, were awaited at the time of publication.
