Delhi Police detained around 600 people ahead of the Cockroach Janta Party's (CJP) proposed protest at Jantar Mantar on Saturday, October 10, as security was tightened across the national capital following the denial of permission for the demonstration.

According to reports, around 500 people were detained as part of preventive measures, including nearly 50 with criminal antecedents. Separately, The Times of India reported that at least 600 people had been detained across Delhi under Section 65 of the Delhi Police Act. Police have also detained around 30–40 people with criminal records across the city's 15 districts.

Authorities have deployed around 25,000 police and paramilitary personnel and intensified checks at border points, railway stations, bus terminals, hotels and other sensitive locations. Drones have also been deployed to monitor the situation near the roundabout close to Hotel Le Méridien in central Delhi, while traffic diversions and transport restrictions remain in place.

The security measures aim to prevent unauthorised gatherings and maintain law and order as CJP supporters prepare to demonstrate at Jantar Mantar, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over allegations concerning the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

Delhi Police defends security restrictions ahead of CJP protest

Delhi Police defended the restrictions imposed across the capital in a post on X, stating that authorities must balance the public's right to protest with the safety of residents and the functioning of key establishments and constitutional bodies in New Delhi.

Police also cited space constraints at Jantar Mantar, noting that the protest venue can accommodate only around 1,000 people at a time.

The demonstration was denied permission amid concerns over public order and the potential impact of a large gathering on traffic and essential services. Police have increased surveillance and established preventive measures across the city to manage the situation.
