Nissan's sub-brand Datsun is gearing up for the April 14 launch of the production-spec redi-Go. The production model is reportedly equipped with a new 1.0-litre, three-cylinder diesel engine developed by Nissan.

A report in Autocar professional indicates this new engine can deliver up to 55bhp of power. The Nissan-developed engine is expected to power a range of small cars of Renault, Nissan and Datsun. The redi-Go, the first Datsun car based on the CMF-A platform, will be its first recipient.

However, the redi-Go might not get the diesel engine at the time of the launch. The model is expected to debut with an 800cc three-cylinder petrol engine, with a diesel engine coming later. Being a product of Nissan's low-cost brand, Datsun redi-Go is expected to be cheaper than the Kwid.

In terms of features, the redi-Go is expected with all the features of Kwid except touchscreen. It will stay true to the silhouette of the concept model unveiled at Auto Expo 2014. With more than 95 percent localisation, the redi-Go is expected to cost under Rs 2.5 lakh for the base variant.

The introduction of the diesel in redi-Go will give a USP to the car, as its rivals — Maruti Suzuki Alto and Hyundai Eon — do not offer diesel engines. The development of the 1.0-litre diesel engine is also important because many reports have said Renault has plans to introduce diesel engines to the Kwid. There is an huge possibility of this engine eventually powering the Kwid's diesel variant.
