Corning Inc, US-based glass manufacturer popularly known for its world class display guard for smartphones and tablets, has come up with the third iteration of its protective glass shield series 'Gorilla Glass 3'.

"This year at CES, Corning will demonstrate its industry leadership in specialty glass and fiber optic technologies with the introduction of two products designed to enhance and extend the capabilities of consumers' favorite devices," said Wendell P. Weeks, chairman of Corning Inc.

He further said," These new innovations build on the increasingly important and continually evolving role of highly engineered glass technologies in delivering improved product performance and functionality through touch capabilities, protective cover glass, and device connectivity."

Corning's display guard series has become one of the standard specifications for smartphones and tablet PC screens. Major smartphone makers like Apple,Samsung, HTC, LG and others are using Gorilla Glass as protective glass gear for high-end smart devices.

The new Gorilla Glass 3 is said to feature Native Damage Resistance (NDR) which is developed on the studies related to atomic structures of core ingredients of glass.

According to Corning, NDR increases the toughness of Gorilla Glass 3 by three-fold with additional scratch resistance for durability. The company also claimed that the new screen guard will have 40 percent reduction in the number of visible scratches and 50 percent boost in retained strength after the glass becomes flawed, reported Engadget.

Corning said that its experts will demonstrate the toughness tests on Gorilla Glass 3 and other product 'optical cables' at the upcoming Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

The company's previous version of display shield, Gorilla Glass 2, was unveiled in January last year. Almost all high-end smartphones in the handset market have incorporated the GG2. The date of availability of smartphones with the new version GG3 is still under wraps.
