The Tamil Nadu government has submitted its list of 12 cities under the Smart City project announced by the Narendra Modi government.

The state government could not submit the list by the 15 December deadline because of the the Chennai floods.

The list, submitted on 28 December, includes Tiruchirapalli, Tirunelveli, Dindigul, Thanjavur, Tiruppur, Salem, Vellore, Coimbatore, Madurai, Erode, Thoothukudi and Chennai. 

The overall list now has 97 cities; while Telangana wants to replace Hyderabad with another city, Uttar Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir are yet to submit one city each for inclusion under the Smart City Mission, the Central government said on Tuesday.

The Union Ministry of Urban Development is evaluating plans received from the states after the completion of which the first batch of 20 cities will be announced in this financial year. The next batch of 40 cities each will be announced in the next two years. The plan will be financed by the Central government.
