After three American Muslims were gunned down "execution style" by an anti-religion gunman in Chapel Hill, several people took to social media to express their outrage.

The incident took place at a condominium complex near the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, at 5 pm EST.

The Chapel Hill shooting suspect, 46-year-old Craig Stephen Hicks, has been charged with first degree murder for killing Deah Barakat, 23, his wife Yusor Mohammad, 21, and her sister Razan Mohammad Abu-Salha, 19, of Raleigh.

It is believed that all three were from Syria.

The incident sparked massive outrage online. Social media users have called Chapel Hill shooting a hate crime against Muslims.

Many expressed dismay over the alleged lack of media coverage on the incident.

"Three Muslim-Americans were murdered at a condominium complex near the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill on 10 February 2015, in what appears to be an anti-Muslim terrorist attack. Eight hours after the attack (which occurred at 5pm EST), there is still very little media coverage, and no national coverage by any major news outlets," journalist Ben Norton wrote on his Twitter account.

Barakat and Mohammad reportedly got married recently.

According to Barakat's Linkedin page, he was a law student and had graduated in 2014. He was also behind a Syrian Dental Relief programme for Syrian refugee students in Turkey. It had surpassed the original goal of $20,000.

His wife Yusor, on the other hand, recently started a DDS program at the UNC School of Dentistry, her LinkedIn profile states. She graduated with a Bachelor's degree in 2014.

The third victim, Yusor's 19-year old sister, was studying at the University of North Carolina.
