It is a special day for the fans of Mani Ratnam and Ilaiyaraaja as both the legends are celebrating their birthday on Tuesday, 2 June.

As the ace director turns 60, the music maestro celebrates his 72nd birthday.

The duo has worked together by creating magical and memorable films in the Tamil entertainment industry. Some of their popular films include "Anjali", "Nayakan", among others.

However, the legends worked together the last time in 1991 for the film, "Thalapathi". Later, Oscar winner AR Rahman became a regular music composer for all Mani Ratnam films.

Check out the memorable films and songs by the duo Mani Ratnam and Ilaiyaraaja below:

Pallavi Anu Pallavi

Mani Ratnam began his career as a director with the 1983 Kannada film "Pallavi Anu Pallavi", and he collaborated with Ilaiyaraaja, who composed the songs "Hrudaya Rangoli", "Nagu Endhidhe", "Oh Premi Oh Premi", among others.

Mouna Ragam

The romantic drama, "Mouna Ragam", that starred Revathi and Mohan is one of the best films of the duo. It also won the 1986 National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Tamil. The film was also known for its songs, "Chinna Chinna Vanna Kuyil", "Nilaave Vaa", among others.

"Anjali", which dealt with the story of a dying mentally-disabled child, was Ilaiyaraaja's 500th film, for which he composed hit songs like "Anjali Anjali", Iruvu Nilavu", and others.

Mammootty and Rajinikanth's Tamil film "Thalapathi", released in 1991, was the last film in which the legends worked together. It was also made into Hindi, Telugu and Malayalam. Ilaiyaraaja had composed the music for the film in all the languages of the Mani Ratnam directorial.
