Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveils BRICS U-17 Football Tournament-2016 Trophy in New Delhi on Oct 1, 2016.IANS

The first edition of the BRICS U-17 football tournament, an initiative by the Narendra Modi government ahead of the FIFA U-17 World Cup in the country next year, is expected to have a fiery start. PM Modi, Union Sports Minister Vijay Goel and All India Football Federation (AIFF) President Praful Patel have all lent their support to the event.

As the name goes, five major emerging economies -- Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa -- will be seen plying their trade in the tournament. The matches will be held every alternate day from October 5 to 15.

According to the government, "The tournament aims at taking the ongoing interaction and cohesion amongst the BRICS nations to a new level of exchange between the youth of these countries in the field of sports."

About 250 players and officials from the five countries are expected to participate in 12 matches. The league matches will be held at Bambolim Stadium in Goa, while the final is scheduled to be held at Fatorda Stadium in Goa on October 15.

"The BRICS Cup is like a pre-World Cup as there are five Teams from four different confederations. We have to be competitive in the BRICS Cup and ensure that we are hard to beat," India U-17 football team coach Nicolai Adam told the AIFF website.

"We have to confirm our competitiveness and focus on the task at hand. At the same time we have to be realistic and give our cent percent in the (BRICS) Cup," he added.
