Delhi commuters may face traffic restrictions and diversions on Saturday, September 12, as the national capital hosts the 18th BRICS Leaders' Summit at Bharat Mandapam.
The Delhi Traffic Police has announced regulated traffic movement on several key roads from 9:30 am to 9 pm due to the movement of VVIPs and international delegates attending the summit.
More than 35 roads across Delhi may be affected, while traffic will be regulated at 22 diversion points during VVIP movements. Commuters have been advised to plan their journeys in advance, allow extra travel time and follow instructions from traffic personnel.
Key roads likely to face restrictions
The traffic restrictions will particularly affect areas around Bharat Mandapam and central Delhi. Major roads and corridors identified for regulated movement include:

- Bhairon Marg
- Tilak Marg
- India Gate and C-Hexagon area
- Sardar Patel Marg
- Patel Road
- NH-48
- Parade Road
- Shanti Path
- Janpath
- Ashoka Road

- Niti Marg
- APJ Abdul Kalam Road
Traffic movement may be regulated or diverted depending on the movement of VVIP convoys and security requirements.
Commuters advised to use Delhi Metro
Delhi Police has advised commuters to use public transport, particularly the Delhi Metro, wherever possible to avoid delays caused by road restrictions.
Metro services are expected to continue operating, while buses, taxis and autorickshaws may face diversions depending on traffic and security arrangements.
People travelling through central Delhi have been advised to check real-time traffic updates before starting their journey and keep additional time in hand.
Airport and railway passengers should plan ahead
Passengers travelling to Indira Gandhi International Airport or major railway stations, including New Delhi, Old Delhi and Hazrat Nizamuddin, have been advised to plan their routes carefully.
Those travelling to the airport are encouraged to use the Metro where feasible. Road users should consider alternative corridors and allow additional time for their journey, particularly during periods of VVIP movement.
Emergency vehicles to get priority
Delhi Police has said emergency and essential-service vehicles will be given priority passage during the traffic restrictions.
The traffic arrangements may also change depending on security requirements and the movement of international dignitaries. Commuters have therefore been asked to follow the directions of traffic personnel and use designated diversion routes.
The BRICS Summit is being held in New Delhi on September 12 and 13, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi hosting leaders and senior representatives from member countries. The heightened security and traffic arrangements are aimed at facilitating the movement of the visiting dignitaries while minimising disruption to public mobility.
