A South Korean fishing trawler carrying 62 people sank near the coast of Russia on Monday, killing one person while 54 are reported missing.

The vessel sank in the Bering Sea near the Chukotka Peninsula. 

Eight people were rescued.

One crew member has been confirmed dead.

There were 11 South Koreans, 35 Indonesians, 13 from Philippines on board the vesssel, besides one Russian, according to South Korean news agency Yonhap News.

Seoul's foreign ministry is reported to have urged Russia to pursue rescue operations.
