Atharvaa-starrer "Kanithan" has got a good start at the Chennai box office, and has performed better than movies like "Miruthan," "Sethupathi," and "Aarathu Sinam."

In the opening weekend, "Kanithan" has collected Rs 51.09 lakh from 156 shows in Chennai, reports Behindwoods. It is considered an above-average opening. The good pre-release talk and fairly positive reviews helped the Tamil movie do good business in its first weekend.

On the other hand, previous-week release "Miruthan" has continued to hold its ground despite new releases. After raking in Rs 1.17 crore from 222 shows in its first weekend, it earned Rs 41.89 lakh from 138 shows. The 10-day collection of the film stands at Rs 2.31 crore, a good number for a Jayam Ravi flick.

"Sethupathi", too, had a decent weekend, collecting Rs 36.50 lakh from 150 shows. In the first weekend, the Vijay Sethupathi-starrer had garnered Rs 74 lakh from 216 shows. The 10-day collection of the movie stands at Rs 1.62 crore.

The other new release, "Aarathu Sinam", is in the fourth spot in Chennai, with a collection of Rs 34.06 lakh from 162 shows. The film has opened to good reviews, and hence is expected to do well in the coming days.

Hollywood movie "The Revenant" has earned Rs 16.05 lakh in its opening weekend in Chennai. The film is expected to do well after its lead Leonardo DiCaprio won Best Actor at the 88th Academy Awards.

Bollywood movie "Neerja" has earned Rs 9.64 lakh from 45 shows. The 10-day collection of the film stands at Rs 31.94 lakh. English film "Deadpool" collected Rs 2.66 lakh to take its tally to Rs 89.57 lakh by the end of its third weekend at the Chennai box office.

"Irudhi Suttru" raked in Rs 1.36 lakh to take its tally to Rs 3.21 crore by the end of its ninth weekend.
