It looks like BMW's hybrid sports car i8 would be the first imported car to reach Indian roads in the new year, going by latest online reports.

The latest buzz swirling around the web is that the German luxury car maker is geared to pull the wraps off its much-awaited hybrid i8 in the Indian market in February 2015.

BMW i8, a petrol-electric hybrid machine that made its maiden appearance in India at the Delhi auto Expo last year, is now set to rock the market in February, claims a new report on ZigWheels. However, the report did not divulge the exact launch date.

Powered by a 3-cylinder, 1.5-litre, twin turbocharging petrol engine, in combination with an electric motor, BMW i8 comes with all the bells and whistles one would need in a high end car. The petrol engine generates a power of 231bhp, a peak torque of 320Nm and is mated to a 6-speed automatic gearbox transmission.

The electric motor of the i8 is capable of generating 131 PS power and 250 Nm torque, taking the total output to 362PS and 570Nm. The car is capable of attaining 0 to 100kmph speed in 4.5 seconds with a top speed of 250kmph; along with a fuel efficiency of 40kmpl.The car weighs just 1,490 kg despite the presence of a large battery pack.

The i8 will be brought to India as completely built up unit (CBU) and is likely to get a price tag in the 2 crore bracket.

Currently BMW sells 1, 3, 5, 6 and 7 Series sedans X1, and X3 and X5 SUVs and sports car M Series, and has 37 outlets across the country. Just to remind, the prices of BMW models have gone up by up to 5 percent from January 2015.
