Amid reports of atrocities allegedly being committed by Pakistani authorities against residents of Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK), the BJP on Tuesday questioned the silence of the United Nations and international human rights organisations.
Former J&K BJP president Ravinder Raina, who is himself a refugee from PoJK, expressed concern over what he described as a reign of terror unleashed by Pakistan in the occupied territory and criticised the international community for remaining silent on the alleged actions of the Pakistani Army.
"Killings of unarmed civilians by the Pakistani Army and Pakistan Rangers have reportedly continued unabated in the Mirpur, Muzaffarabad, Plandari, Kotli, Bhimber and Bagh areas of PoJK over the past three days," Raina said.
"There is no official confirmation of the total number of casualties in these areas. However, some unconfirmed reports suggest that more than 300 unarmed civilians may have lost their lives," he added.
"Where are the United Nations, Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch?" Raina asked, adding, "The residents of PoJK are citizens of India because the territory remains under Pakistan's illegal occupation."
Former Director General of J&K Police S.P. Vaid compared the situation in PoJK to the Jallianwala Bagh massacre and alleged that Pakistani authorities had ordered firing on innocent and unarmed civilian protesters demanding basic amenities.
Protest in Kashmir Over Alleged Atrocities in PoJK
Meanwhile, a group of activists in Kashmir staged a protest and submitted a memorandum to the United Nations, urging it to intervene and take action against Pakistan.
The memorandum, addressed to the United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP) on behalf of the people of Jammu and Kashmir, strongly condemned the alleged actions of Pakistani authorities in PoJK and called for the dispatch of a fact-finding team to assess the scale of casualties and damage in the region.
The memorandum condemned what it described as "unprovoked Pakistani state aggression against innocent civilians in PoJK" and said the protesters were merely exercising their democratic rights.
Kashmiri activist Javed Beigh visited the UNMOGIP office and staged a symbolic protest against the alleged atrocities in PoJK.
"We, the people of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, submit this memorandum to UNMOGIP to register our strong protest against the continued violence allegedly perpetrated by the state of Pakistan in the city of PoJK on the night of June 7, 2026," he told a news agency.
The memorandum stated that people in PoJK, under the leadership of the Jammu and Kashmir Awami Action Committee (JKAAC), had been protesting in Rawalakot and other parts of the region over the alleged failure of Pakistani authorities to fulfil commitments made under the organisation's 38-point charter of demands, most of which related to basic civic necessities.
"Overnight, internet services across PoJK were allegedly suspended, and thousands of personnel drawn from the Pakistan Army, Pakistan Rangers and police forces from Islamabad, Sindh and Punjab were deployed," the memorandum alleged.
It further claimed that security personnel opened fire on unarmed protesters without provocation.
The memorandum said there were varying reports regarding civilian casualties, but these could not be independently verified due to the internet shutdown imposed across the region.
"We, the people of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, strongly condemn the alleged aggression against innocent civilians in PoJK, who were simply exercising their democratic rights as recognised under various international charters," the memorandum stated.
"We stand with our brothers and sisters in PoJK and urge the United Nations to take cognisance of the situation, condemn the violence, and send a fact-finding team to ascertain the extent of human loss in the region," it added.
