A 29-year-old woman was about to be buried alive in Bengaluru after doctors of a prominent city hospital declared her dead.

Shahina Begum had lost consciousness for several hours last week due to "extremely high sugar levels". Her family rushed her to a popular hospital, where doctors told them to make preparations for her burial.

The dejected family brought her back home in Goripalya near Mysuru Road and began preparations for her funeral. The burial was scheduled for the evening and the family was getting ready for the sad event.

"We put a shamiyana in front of our house. We had to perform a ritual of dressing her up with different clothes and that was also done," Shaik Ateeq, her brother, told Deccan Herald.

By that time, the family doctor, who specialises in the care of critically ill patients -- most often in intensive care units (ICU) -- arrived at their home. After checking Begum's vital signs, he told the shocked family that he can make an attempt to save her.

Begum is now on the path to recovery and is expected to be discharged from a hospital this week.
