Banks shut for four consecutive days: Check dates and ways to complete urgent banking workIANS

Bank customers in several parts of India may face a four-day disruption in branch services from September 11 to 14, 2026, due to a nationwide bank strike followed by scheduled holidays.

Bank employees' unions have called a nationwide strike on September 11 to press for their long-standing demands, including a five-day working week and changes to pension and other service-related issues.

The strike will be followed by September 12, the second Saturday, and September 13, Sunday, when bank branches will remain closed across the country. On September 14, banks will also remain closed in several states and cities for Ganesh Chaturthi and related celebrations.

However, customers do not need to worry about all banking services coming to a halt. Several digital banking facilities are expected to remain available during the closure.

What banking services will remain available?

Customers can continue to use UPI, mobile banking and internet banking for regular digital transactions. ATMs are also generally expected to remain operational, allowing customers to withdraw cash and carry out other supported transactions.

Electronic fund transfers through RTGS are also available round the clock, including bank holidays, according to RBI guidelines.

Which services could be affected?

Customers who need to visit a physical branch for cash deposits, document submission, KYC-related work, locker services or other account-related paperwork may have to wait until branches reopen.

Cheque processing and other branch-dependent services could also face delays during the disruption.

Why are bank employees on strike?

The United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU), an umbrella body representing several bank employee and officer unions, is demanding the implementation of a five-day working week.

The unions are also seeking improvements in pension-related matters, including an updated pension system and a uniform dearness allowance formula for pensioners.

What should customers do?

Customers with urgent branch-related work should complete it before the closure where possible. Those unable to do so can use digital banking services for payments and fund transfers during the holiday period.

Customers should also check whether the holiday applies to their particular city or state, as bank holidays can vary by location.

The bank unions have also announced further strike action later this month, with another three-day nationwide strike planned for September 28, 29 and 30. An indefinite strike has also been threatened from October 26 if their demands remain unresolved.
