1:20pm Leading BJP has apparently formed majority in Haryana, the final result will be declared by the evening when vote counting finishes. However, the present Chief Minister of the state, Bhupinder Singh Hooda, has already accepted his defeat.

"I respect public mandate... accept this defeat. I am grateful to Sonia ji and people of Haryana for giving me a chance to serve for 10 years. I extend my wishes to the new government; hope they will work for people at the same pace," Hooda said.

12:25pm Keeping in view the trends in poll result, BJP has apparently decided to form alliance government.

"The people has given us the responsibility, we have double the seats than the next biggest party. We will take support from the party that will help in executing our manifesto," BJP leader Kirit Somaiya said.

"BJP has scored a century. We will form a mini-Modi government in Maharashtra," he added.

11:21am  BJP grans first win both the states; in Haryana Anil Vij wins from Ambala while in Maharashtra Madhuri Misal wins from Parvatti, Pune.

11:15am As BJP is falling short in Maharashtra, it has called upon a meeting in Mumbai to discuss strategies for future. On the other hand, Shiv Sena is apparently keeping its options open for alliance to form government in the state.

9:50am Modi wave do seem to hover over Maharashtra, but it is slowly sliding down from leading number of seats at 141 to 121 in the latest trends.

9:20am In Maharashtra BJP is leading ahead in at least six constituencies including Ghatkopar West represented by Ram Kadam , Ghatkopar East by Prakash Mehta, Parli by Pankaja Munde, Amrawati by Sunil Deshmukh, Nagpur South West by Devendra Fadnavis and Borivali by Vindo Tawde, according to Zee News report.

8am Counting begins in Maharashtra and Haryana assembly at 8am amid tight security and by evening it will be clear if the pre-poll predictions and exit polls were right in predicting victory for BJP in both the states.

The five major parties of Maharashtra, BJP, Congress, NCP, MNS and Shiv Sena along with other regional parties are contesting for 288 assembly seats, while in Haryana BJP, Congress, INLD, HJCBL and other regional parties are contesting for 90 seats.

After three days of agonising wait, the stage seems to be set for the verdict in the assembly polls in Maharashtra and Haryana on Sunday. This day will seal the fate of the two states following the polls on 15 October. Additionally, it will also be an electoral acid test for Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who spearheaded a high-decibel BJP campaign in both Maharashtra and Haryana to wring power from the Congress, in what promised to be a very close contest.

Elections in the two states is being seen as important, especially since BJP has been trying to get a strong foothold in both the assemblies and eying a majority by sweeping away the long-time ruling Congress party.

To ensure success in Maharashtra and Haryana, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had himself stepped into the battlefield for BJP's election campaigning.

Apparently, his decision to engineer the campaigning proved to be in party's favour, as more number of spectators were seen at the campaigning sites than there were during his Lok Sabha campaigns. Modi seemed to have won the voters' faith by his swaying speeches.

All this, coupled with bookies' predictions in Maharashtra, surveys and exit polls in both the states, apparently indicates BJP's victory, and yet another setback for Congress that was reduced to a minority in the Lok Sabha elections.

The only worry that looms large is the chance of a hung assembly in Maharashtra, which has been under President's rule since 28 September after then Chief Minister Prithiviraj Chavan put in his resignation following break-up of the Congress-NCP alliance.

Though BJP is likely to grab most of the assembly seats, if the exit polls are to be believed, there are chances the party may fall short of votes to form a majority government in Maharashtra.

In such a case, it will have to go back into coalition with Shiv Sena shortly after breaking its 25-year-old alliance in September this year.

While BJP has nodded in favour of forging an alliance with Maharashtra's regional parties, if needed, Shiv Sena has declined approaching any other party to form coalition government. However, it has expressed its willingness to go ahead jointly this year for the sake of state, but only if BJP approaches it with the proposal.
