At least six people died and 42 injured in a road accident between two passenger buses in Assam's Lakhimpur district Wednesday early morning.

The mishap took place at Haijan bridge near Lakhimpur town on NH-52 at about 5 a.m when two passenger buses collided head-on with each other. Both the buses were carrying 40 and 35 passengers respectively. 

"The mishap occurred when a Arunachal Pradesh State Transport Corporation bus ( AR-02-0414) from Along to Itanagar collided with another passenger bus (AR-01-R-2611) from Barpetaroad to Silapathar," a police official said.

According to the police reports, the drivers and assistants of both the buses died on the spot, including two other passengers.

The injured commuters were rushed to a nearby North Lakhimpur Civil hospital and almost 10 of them are said to be in a critical state
