Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, who suddenly fell sick while addressing his party workers in Tinsukia on Tuesday, was rushed to Guwahati after his health deteriorated on Wednesday morning.

The 79-year-old had to attend three functions at Tinsukia on Wednesday, but he is said to have been flown to Guwahati for treatment, according to The Times of India report.

Gogoi is now being monitored by a team of doctors from Assam Medical College in Dibrugarh.

He had complained of discomfort during the party meeting on Tuesday evening.

"While addressing party workers in Tinsukia, he suddenly complained of discomfort," The Economic Times cited an official from the Chief Minister's office as saying.

CM's office said that Gogoi was suffering from dysentery and had become weak due to dehydration. "He is taking rest," it told TOI.

Gogoi had undergone three heart surgeries in 2011.
