At least 13 people have died in the last 10 days due to outbreak of Encephalitis in Assam's Jorhat district, Joint Director of Health and Family Welfare Dr Mobibur Rahman said.
While seven people died due to acute encephalitis syndrome (AES) at Jorhat Medical College and Hospital (JMCH), six other patients succumbed to Japanese encephalitis (JE) at Jorhat Christian Medical Centre (JCMC), ANI reported.
A total of 22 people, including four minors and five women, were diagnosed with JE and AEX was detected in 12 others as of Tuesday.
Of the 22 patients diagnosed with encephalitis, 18 are undergoing treatment at JMCH, two at JCMC and two other patients are being treated at two private nursing homes in Jorhat, PTI reported.
As the disease is mosquito-borne, nearly 33,000 medicated mosquito nets have been distributed in the affected areas of the state and 205 health awareness camps have also been set up, Rahman said.
In order to ascertain the number of cases, health authorities are collecting blood samples in the district. Spraying of DDT and fogging have been ordered in more than 45 villages in and around the Jorhat district, PTI reported.
Symptoms:
Encephalitis causes inflammation of the brain and the symptoms are high fever, headache, confusion, drowsiness and fatigue. At a more advanced stage, the symptoms get severe which include, seizures or convulsions, tremors, hallucinations, stroke, hemorrhaging, and memory problems.
