India had sent 495 athletes to the 2026 Asian Games, competing across 36 sports. The Games began on September 19 and concluded on October 4.
At the previous Asian Games in Hangzhou, India had recorded its best-ever performance with 106 medals — 28 gold, 38 silver and 40 bronze. While India fell short of that overall tally in 2026, the team still secured a top-four finish.

Hockey and cricket provide late boost
India's campaign received a major boost in the final stages of the Games. The men's hockey team defeated Malaysia 5-1 in the final to retain the Asian Games title, securing India's 21st and final gold medal of the competition.
India also retained its Asian Games cricket title, with the men's and women's teams both winning gold. The late surge in medals helped India finish fourth overall.
India's performance compared with Hangzhou 2022
India's 85-medal haul in Aichi-Nagoya was below its record 106 medals at Hangzhou 2022. The 2026 tally also included seven fewer gold medals than India's 28-gold haul three years earlier.
However, India's strong finish in the final days of the competition helped the country secure a top-four position, with China dominating the overall standings.
The 2026 Asian Games campaign therefore ended with India securing 21 gold, 27 silver and 37 bronze medals, highlighting strong performances across traditional strengths such as hockey, shooting, athletics and kabaddi, while also producing important results in newer and emerging disciplines.
