Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has addressed the debate surrounding his trademark black-and-white suits, saying the choice is rooted in the values he wants to project as a public leader rather than personal style.
Speaking at a public gathering in Tiruchirappalli, Vijay dismissed criticism over his attire and questioned why his clothing had become a topic of political discussion. The actor-turned-politician said there was nothing unusual about wearing a suit and rejected suggestions that such attire should be reserved for certain sections of society or public office holders.
Explaining the significance behind his wardrobe, Vijay said the black-and-white colour combination was intentionally chosen to symbolise transparency, honesty and simplicity. He noted that the colours reflect his commitment to being straightforward in public life and governance.
"I am not wearing many colours. It is only black and white, just like our hearts. Through these colours, I want to convey that I will remain transparent and simple in everything I do," he told supporters.
Vijay's comments come amid continued discussion over his departure from the traditional white shirt-and-veshti attire commonly associated with Tamil Nadu's political leadership, with his monochrome suits increasingly becoming a distinctive feature of his public image.
Attire Becomes Part Of Political Identity
The discussion over Vijay's clothing began during his swearing-in ceremony as chief minister in May when he appeared in a sharply tailored black suit instead of the traditional attire worn by most Tamil Nadu political leaders. The move immediately triggered widespread discussion across social media and political circles.
Since assuming office, Vijay has consistently appeared at official meetings, government functions and public events in monochrome suits, turning the look into a distinctive part of his political image. Supporters view the style as a symbol of modern leadership, while critics have questioned the departure from established political norms in the state.
The chief minister also indicated that he preferred actions over lengthy explanations, noting that he generally keeps his public speeches brief and focused on governance.

From Cinema Icon To Chief Minister
Vijay's remarks came during his first major public rally after leading the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) to victory in the 2026 Assembly elections. The former film star, known for blockbuster movies such as Ghilli, Thuppakki, Mersal, Master and Leo, formally entered politics in 2024 and became chief minister earlier this year.
Observers say the debate over Vijay's attire reflects a broader shift in Tamil Nadu politics, where image, communication style and symbolism are increasingly becoming part of political messaging. While traditional white clothing has long dominated the state's political landscape, Vijay's black-and-white suits have emerged as a visible marker of his attempt to project a different leadership style.
Whether viewed as a personal preference or a carefully crafted political statement, Vijay's wardrobe has become one of the most discussed aspects of his early tenure as chief minister, drawing attention well beyond the realm of fashion.
