India on Tuesday announced the contingent of the athletes, who would be participating in the 2012 Paralympic Games that will be held in London starting Aug 29 to Sept 9.

Paralympic Games are held post Summer Games and is a major international multi-sport event which encourages the participation of physically challenged sportspersons from around the world.

Sports authorities have selected the athletes based on the quota places allocated to India by the International Paralympics Committee (IPC) which oversees the games.

There are five athletes in athletics, three in powerlifting, one each in swimming and shooting sports disciplines. These sportspersons were given bi-partite entry for the above games

All the 10 athletes underwent training in India and a special acclimatization coaching camp was conducted at Balisdan Sports Village, London, UK.  One athlete underwent special training at Germany. 

The Indian contingent consists of ten athletes, ten other coaches and escorts and three officials, including the Chef-de-Mission. The Government of India is fully funding the cost of the participation of the players, coaches, escorts and officials.

India ended its campaign at the recently concluded 2012 London Olympics with six medals, making it the country's best show so far.
