Actor-turned-politician Vijay and his wife Sangeetha have filed for divorce in the Chengalpattu family court. According to reports, Sangeetha has accused the TVK chief of maintaining an extramarital relationship with an actress and cited this as grounds for divorce.
Timeline of marital discord
Vijay married Sangeetha, a Sri Lankan Tamil, on August 25, 1999. Vijay (Christian) and Sangeetha (Hindu) had their interfaith marriage. It was a traditional Hindu wedding ceremony in Chennai.
In her petition, Sangeetha stated that their marriage was first registered in the United Kingdom on July 10, 1998, followed by a ceremonial wedding on August 25, 1999, at Rajah Muthiah Mandram, Egmore, Chennai, according to Hindu customs. The petition notes that the early years of their marriage were mostly cordial, with Sangeetha devoting herself to the household and raising their children. However, in April 2021, she discovered Vijay's alleged extramarital relationship, causing her deep emotional pain and mental suffering, amounting to betrayal and violation of marital trust.
Things were quite rough and patchy in their marriage, but Vijay assured her that things would get better. The petition claims Vijay was going around with an actress, which resulted in mental cruelty, public humiliation via social media, emotional neglect, and constructive desertion. Attempts to reach an amicable settlement between September 2021 and February 2022, and again between August 2024 and February 2025, through counsel and personal discussions reportedly failed.
Describing the marriage as broken and surviving only on paper, Sangeetha has sought dissolution of permanent alimony proportionate to Vijay's income and social standing, the right to reside in the matrimonial home in Neelankarai until the petition is resolved or equivalent accommodation is provided.
