Three people were killed and another was critically injured after a speeding BMW crashed on Mumbai's Coastal Road early Sunday morning. The accident took place around 5.20 am near Lotus Jetty, opposite Lala Lajpatrai College.
According to police, the BMW was travelling from Marine Drive towards Haji Ali when the driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle due to overspeeding. The car crashed into the divider and fell from the elevated section of the Coastal Road.
The injured occupants were rushed to Mumbai's Nair Hospital, where three were declared dead. The deceased have been identified in reports as 21-year-old Sanay Gujjar, 19-year-old Aditya Jakasania and 17-year-old Dhairya Sheth. Another occupant, 20-year-old Aditya Oswal, sustained critical injuries and is undergoing treatment.
Police said the victims were students and had reportedly been returning after visiting Marine Drive. The BMW was travelling at high speed when the driver allegedly lost control, causing the vehicle to crash into the road divider before plunging down.
The driver has been detained by police, and an investigation is underway to establish the exact circumstances leading to the crash. Authorities are also examining whether any other factors contributed to the accident.
The accident has once again raised concerns over speeding and road safety on Mumbai's Coastal Road, a 10.58-km high-speed corridor connecting Marine Drive with the Worli end of the Bandra-Worli Sea Link.
The case is under investigation, with police recording statements and examining the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash.
