The release date of Vijay's "Thalaivaa" has been confirmed as 9 August.

Earlier, there were reports that the film would be released on 2 August. But the release date was pushed further by a week.

According to Ayngaran International, the UK distributors of the film, "Thalaivaa" will hit the theatres on 9 August with an aim to earn during the Eid weekend.

However, senior film journalist Sreedhar Pillai tweeted that the release date - 9 August - is tentative. He said that the Kerala, Karnataka and overseas distributors of "Thalaivaa" are not happy with the date as it clash with Shah Rukh Khan's much-awaited "Chennai Express", which will hit the theatres a day ahead, on 8 August.

"Chennai Express" will be releasing in 4,000 screens worldwide. The film's crew has been extensively promoting the SRK-Deepika Padukone starrer for the last few weeks. The Kerala distributors are reportedly finding it difficult to get good number of screens for "Thalaivaa".

According to trade sources, an A-list star's film rakes in better collections when it has a solo release. Distributors of "Thalaivaa" outside Tamil Nadu have reportedly sought a change in release date to avoid clash with "Chennai Express". They are reportedly seeking to push the release to 15 August or 23 August.

The big production house Vendhar Movies, which has acquired the distribution rights in Tamil Nadu, will decide on the issue, according to Sreedhar. "Thalaivaa Update - Release tentatively on Aug 9,film in Atmos. Post-Production full swing. Overseas, Kerala Karnataka distributors not happy. They feel it should not clash with Chennai Express (4000 screens worldwide), and prefer Aug 15 or 23. Vendhar will decide," he tweeted.

Directed by AL Vijay, "Thalaivaa" is an action entertainer about a common man who turns into a leader. The Vijay-starrer is one of the most-awaited films of 2013. The film trailer has already generated a lot of buzz and its music is topping the charts. Amala Paul plays the female lead and the rest of the cast includes Santhanam, Sathyaraj, Manobala, Ragini Nandwani and Rajeev Pillai. The film is produced by Chandraparakash Jain under Sri Mishri Productions banner.
