A special occasion turned tragic for a bride who was shot dead by her jilted lover at a wedding venue in Bhopal on Thursday.

Dr Jaishri Namdeo, a pediatrician, and her bride groom Rohit were standing on a stage accepting greetings and gifts from the guests at a marriage garden in Lalghati area of the city. The bride's former lover, Anurag Singh, allegedly shot her at point blank range, reported NDTV.

The Times of India reports that Singh went to the wedding dais in the disguise of a photographer and shot the bride. She reportedly sustained bullet injury in her neck and succumbed to it after being taken to a hospital. There were also reports claiming that the bride groom was also injured in the incident, but has not been confirmed.

The shooter reportedly did not try to flee from the spot. Relatives of the bride caught hold of him and handed him over to the police. The man, who worked as a teacher at a coaching institute, has alleged that he decided to shoot the bride because she cheated on him. However, it is being said that Jayashri never expressed any sort of affection towards him.

Senior police officers have said that the shooter and the victim might have studied together in the past, but it needs to be confirmed, reported NDTV.

Cops have filed a case at the Koh-e-Fiza police station and further investigations are on.
