"Jai Gangaajal" had a better opening than "Neerja" at the box office Friday, but Priyanka Chopra's film failed to beat the opening weekend record of Sonam Kapoor's film.

The three-day box office collection of "Jai Gangaajal" is lesser than Priyanka's last film female "Mary Kom," but it is better than Rani Mukerji's "Mardaani." "Jai Gangaajal" earned approximately Rs 18 crore in its opening weekend, Koimoi.com reports. "Neerja" earned Rs 22.01 crore, "Mary Kom" minted Rs 30.6 crore and "Mardaani" raked in 14.46 crore.

The film had a decent run at the domestic box office, despite receiving mixed reviews. Prakash Jha's directorial film is raking in most of the money from the north circuits, including UP, CI and Bihar. However, the overall opening weekend collection remained low, as other circuits did not perform to the expected level.

Directed by Prakash, the film features Priyanka as Superintendent of Police Abha Mathur, Prakash, who is making his acting debut, as inspector Bhola Nath Singh aka B.N. Singh and Manav Kaul as the main antagonist.

On the other hand, "Neerja" continues to entertain viewers at the worldwide box office. The film was expected to end its lifetime run with approximately Rs 60 crore, but surprisingly it continues to fare well at the worldwide box office.

"Neerja" minted Rs 63.79 crore from the domestic box office and Rs 24.81 crore from the overseas box office. The 17-day worldwide box office collection of "Neerja" stands at Rs 88.60 crore.

"#Neerja continues its GLORIOUS RUN [Week 3] Fri 1.15 cr, Sat 2.20 cr, Sun 2.69 cr. Total: ₹ 63.79 cr. India biz. FANTASTIC," trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted, adding: "#Neerja is EXCEPTIONAL Overseas. Total: $ 3.69 million [₹ 24.81 cr]. Includes Weekend 3 [till 6 March]."

The Sonam-starrer will continue to rake in money from the ticket window, but it remains to be seen whether "Jai Gangaajal" will mint money in its first week.
