Steven Gerrard would have envisaged making the difference and probably even scoring the winning goal after that how-can-anyone-forget-it slip in the last match between Liverpool and Chelsea at Anfield.

However, instead it was a more familiar face of this season, the man who has been doing the business for Chelsea time and again, that made the difference. Diego Costa scored the winner for Chelsea in the second half to help the Blues come from behind and pick up a 2-1 victory.

It all looked peachy for Liverpool after Emre Can scored after nine minutes, only for Gary Cahill to equalise five minutes later.

The game could have gone either way after that, even if Chelsea looked the more dangerous team going forward, and in came Costa to fire the winner for the away team, like he has done so often this season.

"It was a fantastic performance," said Jose Mourinho to BT Sport after the match. "The players as individuals all had a great performance and as team they were in control.

"One point at Anfield, most teams would accept that as a great result, this team did not accept that and I am really, really pleased."

Mourinho revealed Ramires, who started the game in midfield as a replacement for Willian, and Cesc Fabregas played this crunch English Premier League game despite carrying injuries.

"I have to give special word to Ramires and Fabregas but also the medical department, they did fantastic work on them," added the Chelsea manager.

"Fabregas maybe is a problem for the next match. The medical department, with me, took the risk for this game but they are all examples of this team at the moment, working for everyone."

Chelsea, with the win, zoomed seven points clear at the top of the EPL table, while the gap between Liverpool and the league leaders is now a massive 15 points. Very much still unbeaten in the league, Chelsea look near unstoppable at the moment with this measured victory at Anfield only proof of that dominance.

"I thought Liverpool tried everything, they did well, but Chelsea was the better team," said Mourinho. "My previous team started winning in 2004-05 and the same team won year after year, trophies after trophies.

"This is a new team, a new era for Chelsea. We are obviously happy with the squad and the quality of football but no team gets into history without trophies and at the moment this team has no trophies."
