Ajith's "Vedalam" has created history at the box office by becoming the fastest Rs 100 crore Tamil grosser in nine days, beating the record held by Vijay's "Kaththi".

"Vedalam" collected a record-breaking Rs 78.15 crore in six days and according to the latest buzz, the flick has earned about Rs 25 crore in the next three days to take the totally tally to Rs 103 crore.

The flick was released in about 520 screens in Tamil Nadu and about 500 in the rest of the world.

Ilayathalapathy's "Kaththi" had earned Rs 100 crore in 12 days.

It had minted Rs 65.1 crore in Tamil Nadu, Rs 15.4 crore from the rest of India and Rs 20.2 crore from overseas collection centres. The movie directed by AR Murugadoss was released in over 1,000 screens. It has now been broken by Ajith's film.

Interestingly, both the films had hit the screens during Diwali.

In Tamil Nadu, "Vedalam" has earned less than Rs 60 crore and the industry is curiously looking forward to see whether it can hit the Rs 100-crore mark in the state. It may require another week to register its name in the elite club.

"Vedalam" is one of Ajith's biggest box office hits. The movie has broken all the existing first day records and now heading to become the biggest Tamil hit of 2015.

While the budget of "Kaththi", which was produced by Lyca Productions, was said to be around Rs 70 crore, the makers of "Vedalam" invested a little over Rs 60 crore, say trade reports.

"Vedalam" has been written and directed by Siruthai Siva and produced by AM Rathnam. Shruthi Haasan plays the female lead in the movie; Lakshmi Menon also plays an important character.
