Ian Somerhalder, who plays Damon Salvatore on "The Vampire Diaries," has already indicated that Season 8 of the drama would be his last, and this has prompted various theories on how he would leave the show.
One theory has it that his character Damon will die even before his on-screen lover Elena, portrayed by Nina Dobrev, returns. As fans of "The Vampire Diaries" already know, Elena was put in a magic induced sleep by Kai and her life was linked to Bonnie's in such a way that Elena will remain asleep as long as Bonnie lived. Because Kat Graham has also revealed her intention to leave the show after Season 8, it is safe to assume that her character Bonnie will die, facilitating Elena's return.
The prospect of Elena and Damon not ending up together has displeased a lot of fans, who believe a happy ending would be ideal for the couple, as all they wanted was to be together.

Another fan wants Elena's doppelganger Katherine to return and reunite with Stefan. "It must be: Damon and Elena (I can't believe I'm saying this though, but I think Stefan deserves much more than Elena!), Caroline and Klaus, Stefan and ... Katherine. As much as I hate/love Katherine, she was the only one who loved Stefan for real. And he deserves someone who will love him back. Katherine should get a second chance. I have a feeling it's her in that room with the lost sister," pointed out Lia Leah.
