The secret is out. Skoda's new compact SUV will go by the name, Karoq. This means Karoq will be the Czech carmaker's new Yeti to be launched in the market in the second half of 2017. Skoda Karoq will be introduced to the public for the first time at the Stockholm Lifestyle Motor Show on May 18.

Skoda Karoq - origin and meaning

First things first. Skoda Karoq is the new version of the company's compact SUV, the Yeti. Touted as 'the perfect balance between road performance, rugged design and family oriented practicality', the car draws inspiration from Kodak, an Island borough in the southern coast of the US state of Alaska. The name of the Skoda Karoq and its spelling originate from the language of the Alutiiq. Alutiiq is an indigenous tribe living on the island with a population of slightly over 15,000 people. The name Karoq is a combination of the terms, 'KAA'RAQ' (car) and 'RUQ' (arrow).

Skoda Karoq —what to expect

The new Karoq will be based on the VW Group's MQB platform, which underpins other models including the Audi Q3, Seat Ateca and Volkswagen Tiguan. The new design of the compact SUV will be inspired from the VisionS design study concept that was unveiled at the 86th Geneva Motor Show in March 2016.

Little else is known about the Czech carmaker's upcoming Karoq. However, the early spy shots of the model suggest that the Karoq could have a design similar to Skoda Kodiaq with sharp creases and lines. The Karoq is likely to emote the feeling of a miniature Kodiaq. The cabin of the Karoq is also expected to borrow the design cues from the Kodiaq and is expected to offer touchscreen infotainment system. The Karoq in all likelihood will be a five-seat compact SUV.

Skoda Karoq—Engine

While it is too early to comment on the possible powertrains on the all- new Yeti, reports however suggest it will share engine with the SEAT Ateca SUV in the VW family. The engine line-up will include 114bhp 1.0 TSI three-cylinder turbo petrol, 148bhp 1.4 EcoTSI four-cylinder turbo petrol, 114bhp 1.6 TDI four-cylinder turbo diesel and a 148bhp 2.0 TDI four-cylinder turbo diesel engine. Transmission options are likely to include a six-speed manual and seven-speed DSG making.
