Salman Khan's "Prem Ratan Dhan Payo" (PRDP) has shattered the records of his previous films, including "Bajrangi Bhaijaan" and "Ek Tha Tiger", to become the highest opening day grosser.

"Prem Ratan Dhan Payo", also starring Sonam Kapoor, recorded the highest first day income for any Bollywood film this year, beating "Bajrangi Bhaijaan".

"@BeingSalmanKhan Sooraj Barjatya creates box office history #PRDP races past 40 crore on day 1! Highest day 1 by this family blockbuster," Fox Star Hindi tweeted.

"#PremRatanDhanPayo collects ₹ 40.35 cr on Day 1. Hindi version only... Tamil and Telugu biz being compiled... OUTSTANDING START!" trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted.

However, the film has failed to beat the records of Shah Rukh Khan's "Happy New Year", which still holds the title of highest opening day grosser.

"Prem Ratan Dhan Payo", which received mixed reviews, earned Rs 40.35 crore on day one at the domestic box office. The Rs 40 crore box office collection is only for the Hindi version of the film. The first day business will increase after adding the Telugu and Tamil version income, but the overall collection is lower than "Happy New Year".

Shah Rukh's film "Happy New Year", which was released a day after Diwali last year, earned Rs 42.62 crore from the Hindi version, Rs 1.43 crore from the Telugu version and Tamil version got Rs 92 lakh, according to Bollywood Hungama.

Nevertheless, "PRDP" has set records at several circuits in India, especially in the North circuits, according to Box Office India.

Starring Salman in a double role, the film also features Sonam, Neil Nitin Mukesh, Anupam Kher, Swara Bhaskar and Armaan Kholi in pivotal roles. "PRDP", helmed by Sooraj Barjatya, was released in 5,600 screens worldwide on 12 November.
