Although Google had rolled out beta versions of the upcoming Android O operating system for Pixel and Nexus devices weeks ago, the company is yet to release the final version of the new OS to the public. Now, if a new report is to believe, users won't be able to get their hands on the upcoming OS until later this summer.

Google, which is known for releasing new versions of Android towards the year end, is expected to roll out the official Android O update for Pixel phones in the first or second week of August, AndroidPolice's David Ruddock, citing a "reliable source."

The new OS, which will be released as an OTA (over the air) to Pixel handsets, is also expected to be made available to all compatible Nexus devices around the same time.

If Android O is indeed released in August, the announcement of the Pixel 2 could be delayed for another month or two, according to Phonearena. However, as Ruddock himself said, release dates are always subject to change due to unexpected issues. Therefore, it's better to take this with a pinch of salt.

Google had announced its first developer preview version of Android O back in March with numerous feature improvements. According to the company, the new Android O platform upgrade will bring Fluid Experiences and Vitals.

Fluid Experiences promises to introduce new features aimed at enhanced productivity for the user such as Notification Dots, Picture-in-Picture, Smart Text Selection and Autofill.

Vitals, on the other hand, will boost the battery backup time and also offer speed boosts to handsets with lower specifications while running Android O.

According to the latest Android distribution numbers from Google, Android 7.0 Nougat – the most recent major Android version – is now installed on 9.5 percent of all active Android devices. However, the platform is dominated by Android 6.0 Marshmallow and Android 5.0 Lollipop, accounting for 31.2 percent and 30.8 percent of the overall distribution.

The numbers were based on data collected during a 7-day period ending on June 5.
