Miss District of Columbia Deshauna Barber was crowned Miss USA 2016 on Monday, June 6. Along with being an IT analyst, this 26-year-old beauty is also an Army Reserve Officer, who impressed the judges and audience with her wit and strength.
During her question round, Barber was asked if Pentagon put the military's ability to perform in jeopardy by opening up combat roles. To this she replied, "As a woman in the United States Army, I think it was an amazing job by our government to allow women to integrate into every branch of the military."
She further added, "We are just as tough as men. As a commander of my unit, I'm powerful, I am dedicated and it is important that we recognize that gender does not limit us in the United States." As the new Miss USA, Barber hopes to throw light on veterans' issues, especially with regards to their health and post-traumatic stress disorder.
