President Pranab Mukherjee and Prime Minister Narendra Modi received the mortal remains of Dr APJ Abdul Kalam -- the Missileman of India, who passed away in Shillong on Monday evening -- at Delhi's Palam airport on Tuesday.

The body of the former president, who was one of the greatest Indian scientists, was brought to Delhi by an Indian Air Force aircraft around noon. A tri-services Guard of Honour was given to Kalam at the airport.

Several leaders, including Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, paid their last respects to Kalam at the airport.

The body was then taken to his official residence at 10 Rajaji Marg, where other leaders, including BJP president Amit Shah, Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, vice-president Rahul Gandhi and former prime minister Manmohan Singh, paid homage to the late former president.

Later, people were allowed to pay tributes to Kalam for two hours in the evening.

His body will be taken to his native place, Rameswaram, in Tamil Nadu for the last rites. The family of Dr Kalam had requested that his body be brought to Rameswaram for his funeral on Thursday.

Earlier, late on Monday evening Kalam's body was flown to Guwahati from Shillong in an Air Force helicopter, where Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and several other leaders and senior IAF officials paid their last respects to the "People's President".

Kalam was delivering a speech at IIM Shillong when he suffered a cardiac arrest and collapsed. He was rushed to Bethany Hospital around 6.30 pm. Around two hours later, he was declared dead and his body was shifted to the Military Hospital in Shillong, defence public relations officer Amit Mahajan told PTI.

The news of his sudden demise came as a shock to the nation. Kalam would have turned 84 in October.

The central government has announced a seven-day state of mourning in the honour of the 11th President of India and pioneer of space and missile programmes. The seven days of state mourning will be observed throughout India from 27 July to 2 August, PTI reported.

After Kalam's death, a fake photo of Kalam's 'last moment' at IIM Shillong went viral on social media. However, it was later revealed that the photo was taken at an awards function held at Sangeet Natak Academy eight years ago.
