Superstar Rajinikanth's "Lingaa" has been censored and has fetched a clean "U" rating from the censor board.

The film is confirmed to release on 12 December as a birthday treat for Thalaivar fans. "#lingaa censor done .. "U" certificate :):):) 12-12-14 confirmed !!!! Can't wait for you to Rock the world this birthday Appa !!!!!!!," tweeted Soundarya Rajinikanth.

"Lingaa" was embroiled in a controversy after a man named KR Ravi Rathinam filed a petition in the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court seeking stay on the film's release alleging that the film's team has stolen the storyline of his project "Mulla Vanam 999," which is based on the Mullaperiyar dam.

The petitioner claimed that he had uploaded his film's story online and the "Lingaa" team had stolen it, but director KS Ravikumar denied the allegations, reported The Times of India.

Apparently, the petitioner did not file any documents that support his claims. All decks were cleared for the film's release after the court reserved its order on the writ petition.

The Rajini starrer will be releasing simultaneously in three languages including Tamil, Telugu and Hindi. The film will reportedly release in nearly 3,000 screens worldwide. Eros has acquired the distribution rights of the Rajini starrer for a whopping amount. The film is red hot in the trade and its business is expected to commence soon.

According to reports, Vendhar Movies are the front runners to bag the Tamil Nadu and Kerala theatrical rights of "Lingaa." Eros has snapped the audio rights of "Lingaa," while the film's satellite rights have been sold to Jaya TV.

"Lingaa" is making all the right noise with the release of impressive teasers, trailer and the songs. The film has created a huge pre-release buzz thanks to the presence of the superstar. For the first time in several years, Rajinikanth will have two releases in the same year. The actor's last release "Kochadaaiyaan" hit screens in May 2014, while "Lingaa" is all set for a December release.

The collaboration of the superstar with commercial director KS Ravikumar has raised the expectations from "Lingaa" as the actor-director duo has given blockbuster films like "Muthu" and "Padayappa."

"Lingaa" is likely to take grand openings as Rajini enjoys a massive fan following worldwide. The actor's last live action film "Endhiran" was a massive hit at the box office. It remains to be seen if "Lingaa" will be able to perform better than "Endhiran."

The action entertainer will have Rajinikanth in dual roles. Sonakshi Sinha and Anushka Shetty play the female leads, while Santhanam, Karunakaran, Dev Gill and Jagapathi Babu are also part of the cast. AR Rahman has composed the songs, while cinematography is handled by Rathnavelu.
