Union Environment Minister Anil Madhav Dave passed away due to cardiac arrest on Thursday, May 18 at the age of 61. The Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, Shivraj Singh Chauhan has announced a two-day mourning in the state.

While Prime Minister Narendra Modi and several of his Cabinet colleagues condoled his death on Twitter, Social media platforms saw an outpouring of grief after the news became public.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on learning of his death, immediately took to Twitter to say: "Absolutely shocked by the sudden demise of my friend & a very respected colleague, Environment Minister Anil Madhav Dave ji. My condolences. [sic]"

He added in subsequent tweets: "I was with Anil Madhav Dave ji till late last evening, discussing key policy issues. This demise is a personal loss. Anil Madhav Dave ji will be remembered as a devoted public servant. He was tremendously passionate towards conserving the environment."

Other political leaders have also expressed their grief on Twitter.

"Anil Madhav Dave ji was the perfect definition of a gentleman & good human being. I'll forever miss his smiling character. May his soul RIP, " said Kiren Rijiju, Minister of State for Home Affairs.

"Anil Madhav Dave Ji was a valued colleague, outstanding MP dedicated to cause of environment & sustainable development.Condolences to family," said Ravi Shankar Prasad, the Minister of Law and Justice of India.

Ram Bilas Paswan, the current Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution expressed his condolences on Dave's demise.

A few leaders of the Congress also took to Twitter to express their condolences.

Manikaro Thakare, the former president of the Congress in Maharashtra said, "Saddened to know about sad demise of Union Environment Minister Anil Madhav Dave ji.My heartfelt condolences to the family."

"My deepest condolences on the demise of Union Environment Minister Sh. Anil Madhav Dave. May God give strength to the family," said Vijay Inder Singla, the National Spokesperson of AICC.

"Condolences on Sad Demise of Sh Anil Madhav Dave," said Dhanraj Nathwani, senior Vice President of Reliance Industries.
