"Janatha Garage" has surpassed the Rs 100 crore gross mark at the worldwide box office in its opening week, but it is yet to beat the lifetime records of "Sarrainodu," "Srimanthudu" and "Magadheera."
"Janatha Garage" was one of the most-hyped and highly-awaited Telugu movies of 2016. The movie was released in over 2,000 screens around the world on Sept. 1 and received superb response everywhere. The film collected Rs 102 crore gross at the worldwide box office during its eight-day-extended first week. It earned approximately Rs. 64.40 crore for its global distributors.
After seeing the pace of its collection, trade experts in Film Nagar predicted that the Koratala Siva-directed action drama would shatter the lifetime records of "Srimanthudu" and "Magadheera." It was expected that "Janatha Garage" would become the second all time highest grossing Telugu movie after SS Rajamouli's "Baahubali: The Beginning." But its business hit rock bottom in its second week.
"Janatha Garage" collected just 9.70 crore gross at the worldwide box office in its second weekend, taking its global gross total to Rs. 111.70 crore. The film has earned Rs. 4.6 crore for its distributors. Its current pace of collection shows that the movie may struggle to cross Rs 125 crore gross mark in the global market.
Allu Arjun's "Sarrainodu" collected Rs. 127.6 crore gross at the worldwide box office in its life time and it is the highest grossing Telugu movie of 2016. "Magadheera," "Srimanthudu" and "Attarintiki Daaredi" collected Rs. 150 crore, Rs. 144.55 crore and Rs. 131 crore, respectively, and they are second, third and fourth highest grossing Telugu films of all time. "Janatha Garaga" may not beat these records.
Here is the table detailing the estimated gross collection and distributors' share of Rs. 100 crore grosser Telugu films. All figures are in crore.
