A collision between a commuter train and a truck in Indonesian capital Jakarta has resulted in a deadly explosion as parts of the train burst into flames, reports suggest.

The incident took place in South Jakarta at 11.21 local time (8: 49am India time) on Monday at a train crossing in Bintaro Permai. The train reportedly collided with a truck that was carrying explosive liquefied Patrolium gas.

Police and a spokeswoman from the commuter train company, PT Kai, has confirmed the death of two people so far.

Early pictures of the incident show black smoke billowing from parts of the exploded train while the deadly impact of the explosion sent a fireball of orange flames shooting towards the sky, the Associated Press has reported.

There have been no updates on the number of people injured as rescue efforts are in progress. Fire fighters were seen at the spot battling the fires at the explosion site.
