Dhanush-Amala Paul's "Velai Illa Pattathari" ("VIP") has embarked on a good start in key overseas markets like the United States, Australia and Malaysia.

United States

"VIP" has grossed more than ₹1 crore in its opening weekend at the US box office. The film earned $172,085 (₹1.04 crore) from 29 screens in the first weekend, according to Bollywood Hungama. It is all set to surpass the collections of Vidya Balan's Hindi film "Bobby Jasoos," which has earned ₹1.13 crore at the end of the third weekend.

The film has raked in $175,492 in four days, say the US distributors. It is Dhanush's first time to have surpassed the $100,000 and it is expected to surpass $200,000 soon, according to ATMUS Entertaiment.

Malaysia

"VIP" has grossed 331,622 Malaysian Ringgit (₹62.91 lakh) from 16 screens in its opening weekend. Tamil films have a huge market in Malaysia and they score well at the box office. The performance of Dhanush's film has proved it once again.

The film has surpassed the collections of Sivakarthikeyan's "Maan Karate," which had earned ₹61.42 lakh (reported screens) in its debut weekend.

Australia

The romantic action entertainer has minted A$45,343 (₹25.64 lakh) from four screens at the Australia box office.

The film has performed better than Hindi erotic thriller "Hate Story 2," which has grossed ₹6.33 lakh from nine screens in its opening weekend. "VIP" has also surpassed "Bobby Jasoos" collections amounting to ₹25.04 lakh at the end of its third weekend.

Tamil Nadu

"VIP" is doing exceptionally well in Tamil Nadu. The film earned around ₹13 crore in its first weekend at the TN box office. It has also managed to hold well on Monday being a weekday. Particularly, in Chennai and Chengalpattu areas, "VIP" has been doing steady business.

The film is likely to continue its good run for another week as no big Tamil release is scheduled on 25 July.

Salman Khan's Bollywood film "Kick," which will be releasing on Friday, might pose some competition for the Dhanush starrer. Nevertheless, "VIP" is expected to dominate the TN box office for a few more days.
