Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor starrer "Gunday" has opened on a grand note with ₹16 crore, but the film failed to break "Jai Ho" day one record in India.

As predicted, the action thriller has done remarkable business on the foremost day at the domestic box office and registered good occupancy on first Friday with several circuits having housefull shows.

"#Gunday is off to a splendid start at the BO. Does rocking biz on Fri. #Gunday Fri ₹ 16.12 cr nett [2800 screens]. India biz only. Fantastic," trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted.

The film, which also stars Irrfan Khan and Priyanka Chopra, has managed to score well at both multiplexes and single screens across India. The screen count of "Gunday" is much lower than that of Salman Khan's "Jai Ho". But the pre-release buzz and the opening day occupancy suggested that the Ranveer-Arjun starrer would break "Jai Ho" opening day record.

Nevertheless, the income is still surprisingly as it was released in only 2800 screens compared to "Jai Ho" 4500 screen record.

Ali Abbas Zafar's directorial venture is the sixth biggest non-holiday opener in India. The film has shattered the first day record of "Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-leela" with a small margin.

The film performed well in almost all the circuits in India, but it was East Punjab that stood out the best, according to boxofficeindia.

Valentine's Day, positive word of mouth and critics reviews worked in the favour of the film.

Now all eyes are set on the opening weekend total as it will decide the fate of the film. And trade analysts have predicted a good opening weekend for "Gunday".

"As per trends, expecting #Gunday to have a phenomenal ₹ 45 cr to ₹ 50 cr opening weekend," Adarsh said.
