Google Doodle Celebrates Srinivasa Ramanujan’s 125th Birthday with Geometrical Shapes and Equations

Google Doodle celebrates the 125th birth anniversary of renowned mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan on Saturday.

The search engine giant dedicates the doodle as a tribute to the Indian-born genius whose contribution to the field of mathematics is immense.

The doodle has the letters of "Google" drawn into various geometrical shapes by a school kid, assumed to be Srinivasa Ramanujan himself. The logo is embellished with various formulas and equations.

Born on December 22, 1887, in Erode to a Brahmin family, Ramanujan exhibited unusual talent in mathematics at a very early age without having any formal training in the subject. Though he was an expert in maths, he did not clear his pre-university exams due to his lack of interest in other subjects.

Following the works of S.L. Loney, Bernoulli and Euler, he developed various theorems and mathematical analysis including infinite series, improper integrals and number theory among others. Later, he sent a copy of his findings to renowned English Mathematician G.H. Hardy who invited Ramanujan to England and they worked together for five years.

Ramanujan acquired a Bachelors' Degree in Science in 1916. He was the first Indian to be honoured with the Fellow of the Royal Society in England.

He returned to India in 1918 on account of his poor health and breathed his last on April 26, 1920, at the age of 32.

In 2011, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had announced December 22 as National Mathematics Day and had declared 2012 as National Mathematical Year as a mark of respect on his 125th birthday.
