Google, Acer Rolls out C7 Chromebook laptopReuters

Google on Tuesday unveiled its latest low-cost chromebook device, dubbed as Acer C7, in collaboration with Acer. The device has a price tag of $199.

The latest offering from Google runs on cloud-based Google Chrome OS and sports a screen of 11.6-inch 1366x768 pixel HD display. The device is priced cheaper than Google's previous chromebook which was unveiled in association with Samsung in October. Acer C7 Chromebook is powered by 1.1 GHz Intel Celeron 847 processor with 2GB RAM.

"The new Acer C7 Chromebook delivers a hassle-free computing experience with speed, built-in security and the simplicity of automatic updates. It features a full-size keyboard, fully clickable trackpad, an extra bright 11.6-inch display and over 3.5 hours of battery life," wrote Sundar Pichai, senior vice president of Chrome and Apps at Google in a blog post.

"Powered by an Intel Core processor, the Acer Chromebook is fast-boots up in 18 seconds, resumes instantly and high-definition videos play smoothly."

Chromebooks are distinct for their fast-boot timings. According to the company, the latest edition of the low-cost chromebook will take approximately 18 seconds to boot up which is slightly longer than the boot-up timings of Samsung Chromebook. However, Acer C7 Chromebook is priced cheaper than the last device which was priced $249.

The device, which is placed at the budget end of the laptop segment, features 320GB internal memory along with 100GB free Google Drive storage for two years. The device weighs 1.4kgs and measures 1-inch in thickness. Unlike Samsung version, the Acer Chromebook comes with a hard disk which makes the device heavier and larger.

On the connectivity front, the Acer notebook comes with dual band Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n and Ethernet connectivity, HDMI and VGA ports, HD camera and 3 USB 2.0 ports. The company claims 3.5 hours battery life with normal usage whereas the Samsung had a battery back of 6.5-hour.The device is available at the Google Play, Amazon and Best Buy stores in the US. In the UK, it is available at the Google Play Store or Amazon.
