Japanese motorcycle manufacturer Yamaha unveiled the new YZF-R6 at the AIM Expo in Florida, USA. The first major facelift for the supersport in nine years features a revamped styling in line with the elder sibling, the YZF-R1.

Yamaha claims the new version takes riding performance to the next level and embraces the R-series styling. The company also claims the new design has increased aerodynamic efficiency by 8 per cent. This contributes to a higher top speed during track riding. The new version comes with redesigned front cowl and windscreen. The LED turn indicators are now incorporated behind the rear-view mirrors. A central ram-air intake is flanked by slim LED headlamps completes R-series styling.

New addition in the R6 include Traction Control System(TCS) that extracts more efficient drive force from the rear tire during acceleration. The R6 also borrowed parts the same type as on the YZF-R1, such as front forks. Upside-down suspension has been enhanced to 43mm diameter inner tube replacing the current 41mm front forks.

Continuing from the YZF-R1, a lightweight aluminium 17-litre fuel tank has been adopted. Compared to a steel fuel tank which is fitted in the outgoing R6, aluminium tank sheds weight of approximately 1.2 kg. The New R6's seat and rear subframe have been newly designed. The new R6 is also offered with Quick Shift System (QSS) as option that helps in fast and smooth upshifts.

Unfortunately, Yamaha engineers have not touched the engine. The motorcycle is powered by the same In-line 4-cylinder, 599cc liquid-cooled engine. Company has not divulged power figures yet. 2017 YZF-R6 will be offered in three different colours – Intensity White/Matte Silver, Matte Raven Black, and Team Yamaha Blue. It will go on sale in US market in March 2017.
