"Thalaivaa" has performed decent business at the Kerala box office despite the release of several Malayalam films.

The Vijay-starrer was released in about 120 screens in Kerala on 9 August. Vijay enjoys a huge fan base in the southern state and some of his earlier films including "Pokkiri" and "Thuppakki" have fared well there.

"Thalaivaa" had a thunderous opening and topped the Kerala box office during the Eid weekend (9-11 August) raking in ₹1.12 crore, even though four Malayalam films and one Hindi film - "Chennai Express" were released during that period. Shah Rukh Khan's "Chennai Express", which had smashed several records, earned around ₹93 lakh in the first weekend at the Kerala box office, according to Koimoi. "Thalaivaa" performed better than "Chennai Express" and other Malayalam biggies in the state.

However, the Vijay starrer has failed to maintain its momentum after the first weekend. The film's collections have considerably dropped in the first week. It is still being screened across 50 theatres in the state even after two weeks of its release. The action-drama flick has done decent business despite facing strong competition from other releases.

According to Behindwoods, "Thalaivaa" grossed ₹4.8 crore at the end of the third weekend. The nett amount is around ₹3.6 to ₹3.7 crore.

"Thalaivaa" scored big in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. Particularly in TN, the film had a very good opening although it hit the screens over a week after the worldwide release.

The action-drama flick made an impressive start in overseas markets as well. "Thalaivaa" is a bit hit in the UK, where the film minted ₹2.37 crore after the third weekend. "Tamil film #Thalaivaa continues its victorious march in UK. Total till Sunday night: £ 236,050 [Rs 2.37 cr]. HIT," film critic and trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted.

"Thalaivaa" was reportedly made on a budget of over ₹70 crore. The total collections earned by the film are yet to be officially announced.

Directed by AL Vijay, "Thalaivaa" has Vijay playing the role of man who runs a water business in Australia and then takes over his father's role in Mumbai. Sathyaraj plays as his father, while Santhanam features as his friend. Female lead Amala Paul dons the role of an undercover police officer.

The rest of the cast includes Rajeev Pillai, Abhimanyu Singh, Ragini Nandwani, Ponvannan and Nassar.
