Most zombies aren't known for their good deeds. There is hardly any precedent in popular culture. Unlike Casper the friendly ghost or Homer the Happy Ghost, zombies aren't expected to help an old lady cross the street. They are, however, known to eat your brain and flesh.

But deifying these stereotypes, thousands of Zombies roamed the streets of Mexico City on Saturday in the name of charity. The city held its ninth annual zombie walk to collect canned and non-perishable goods for food banks and homes in need. Zombies young and old took part and said it's both fun and important.

"The zombie walk has always been about having fun. It's also for a good cause," a participant was quoted saying to Reuters.

"Collecting food for different organisations is the purpose of the walk. But we also just like to Zombify ourselves," another participant said.

Similar Zombie walks also took place in other Mexican cities. The Zombie walk phenomenon began in 2001, since then the event has spread to major cities around the world, including New York, Buenos Aires, Bogota, Singapore and Sao Paolo and Frankfurt.
