For the first time in the history of Indian cinema, an association has been formed for women in the entertainment industry, and the South Indian state Kerala is setting an example for many with this initiative. Women in Cinema Collective, a federation formed for the welfare of women working in Mollywood, will be led by actress Manju Warrier and editor Beena Paul.

Parvathy, Vidhu Vincent, Rima Kallingal and Sajitha Madathil have also been selected as top executives of the association. Artistes and technicians belonging to other associations like AMMA and FEFKA can also be its members.
Manju, Beena, Sajitha, Sayanora Philip, Anjali Menon, Ramya Nambeesham, Parvathy, Vidhu, Deedi Damodaran, Asha Achy Joseph and few other members of Women in Cinema Collective met Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Thursday, May 18 on the formation of the organisation, which aims in understanding and resolving the issues faced by women in the cinema industry. "Towards finding our own voice and own space [sic]," Manju wrote while sharing the photo of their meeting with the CM.
Recently, after a popular actress was allegedly assaulted in a moving car, the Mollywood actors' association AMMA had instructed all women members not to travel alone. The decision had then irked many celebs, including director Aashiq Abu and actress Sajitha, among others, and is said to be one of the reasons for the formation of this new association for women.
After the news on Women in Cinema Collective formation broke out on social media, Prithviraj Sukumaran and 22 Female Kottayam director, Aashiq, husband of actress Rima, have extended his wishes for the initiative via his Facebook page.
