The third episode of HBO's latest sci-fi series, Westworld, has once again given traction to a popular theory regarding Bernard, which states that he is, in fact, an android and not a human scientist.

Although the episode, titled The Stray, did show Bernard, who was revealed to have a dead son, reaching out to his estranged wife, a good number of fans believe it is just a part of his story designed to fool viewers. As Shannon Woodward's character explained in the episode, the backstories of the hosts are detailed as they provide them with an anchor and let them believe they are humans, and not androids.

The Westworld Reddit forums are filled with theories on why Bernard could be an android, and according to one Reddit user, Dr Ford saying Bernard was the result of hundreds of mistakes is a giveaway sign.

Another one feels that "having an Android in charge of creating and crafting other Androids seems like it would be in line with Hopkins' seemingly apparent quest for exploring the limits of artificial life. Also would explain Bernard's willingness to let his mistake slide for the sake of Chaos and its place as a natural drive for evolution."

It remains to be seen if this popular theory of Bernard being an android proves to be correct.

The synopsis for the Season 1 episode 4 titled Dissonance Theory reads:

Dolores joins William and Logan on a bounty hunt in the badlands; the Man in Black finds a critical clue; Dr. Ford and Theresa discuss the future of the park; Maeve is troubled by a recurring vision.

Westworld is aired on Sundays on HBO and Tuesdays on Star World premiere HD.
