After dispatching one Sam in the second round of Wimbledon, Roger Federer will turn his focus to another Sam as the third round action at the All-England club continues on Saturday.
Federer was at his elegant best against Sam Querrey in the second round, with the Swiss making light of some powerful serves from the American to coast to a 6-4, 6-2, 6-2 victory.
Querrey, with his big serves and ability to volley, would have fancied his chances against Federer, but the Swiss was at his majestic best, swatting aside the challenge with consummate ease.
"So far so good," said the 17-time Grand Slam and seven-time Wimbledon champion after the straightforward victory. "Sometimes you can only play as well as your opponent lets you. Sometimes the feeling is good out there.
"[Against Querrey it] was definitely a good day. I sort of returned well, served OK. I definitely think I can serve a little bit better. I didn't check my match stats, but I feel like things are definitely good out there.
"Querrey can definitely be dangerous. He's got a big game, especially on the grass. He was going for his shots. It was important today to move well and be clear in the important moments. I felt like I was. It was a good match.:
Big shots and serves can be expected of Federer's next opponent as well – Sam Groth – the Australian, who has the weapons on grass to cause a few upsets.
Groth sent American Jack Sock packing in four sets in the first round, before compatriot James Duckworth was also dispatched, this time in straight sets, in the second round.
Having said that, however, Groth will have to play some seriously good tennis – kind of like Dustin Brown did – and hope Federer is off his game – a bit like Rafael Nadal was – to stand a chance of beating the Swiss master, because Federer, going by the first two matches, looks determined to win an eighth Wimbledon title this year.
"I am as determined as ever," Federer said of wanting to win another title at SW19. "You know, I've always loved playing here. Clearly last year was a great tournament. It was tough, not getting it at the end [Federer lost to Novak Djokovic in the final]. I was so close. But Novak did great.
"So one year goes by and here you are again trying to go all the way there to the finals and then hopefully playing even better than I played last year.
"I think it's possible. But then again, many players are playing well. You know, Andy is playing better than he was last year. The younger guys have gained a year of experience on the grass. Clearly it's not going to get easier.
"At the same time, I feel like when my game's going well, like it was now, this week so far, and also last year, at the level I was playing, I feel like there's a good chance for me as well."
The final match on Centre Court will be Andy Murray vs Andreas Seppi and if this match will be anything like the final one yesterday, we could be in for a cracker. The home crowd, though, will hope their favourite goes through this time.
