Trump India visit LIVE Updates: PM Modi, Trump finalise defence deals worth $3 billion, sign 3 MoUs

US President Donald Trump will be discussing key issues with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and officials of the government on the second and main leg of his two days India visit. Donald Trump and Melania Trump arrived in India on Monday, Feb 24 and took a tour of Ahmedabad.

Trump was given a ceremonial welcome at the Rashtrapati Bhavan. Later he was scheduled to visit Rajghat. PM Modi and Trump will hold restricted and delegation-level talks at the Hyderabad House.  Business is set to dominate the agenda between the two leaders today.

"Tomorrow in Delhi, we will lay a wreath, plant a tree at Raj Ghat in honour of this leader (Mahatma Gandhi) who is revered all around the world," Trump had said on Monday at a public event in Ahmedabad's Motera stadium.

PM Modi and Donald Trump addressed a mega event at the Motera cricket stadium where over 1 lakh people had gathered to witness the extravaganza. After visiting the Taj Mahal later on Monday evening, Trump landed in Delhi and checked in at ITC Maurya hotel.

India and the US will be signing a $3 billion defence deal that Donald Trump announced earlier. PM Modi will also be hosting the Trumps for lunch. Watch this space for more live updates.

Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla said, "Issue of CAA didn't come up in the meeting. On religious freedom, there was an appreciation on both sides that pluralism and diversity are a common binding factor in both countries. Issues on cross-border terrorism, narcotics, financial accountability with regard to terrorism - in this context, concerns were put out on the table"

"We did share that there has been a great deal of positive developments in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K). Focus is now on development. That things were leading up in the right direction. The appreciation that great deal has been done towards moving in that direction"

"Our teams have made tremendous progress for a comprehensive trade agreement and I'm optimistic we can reach a deal of great importance to both countries. Since I took office, US exports to India are up nearly 60% and exports of high-quality American energy have grown by 500%. During our visit, we discussed the importance of a secure 5G wireless network and the need for this emerging technology to be a tool for freedom, progress, prosperity, not to do anything with where it could be even conceived as a conduit for suppression and censorship."

"Earlier today we expanded our defence cooperation with agreements for India to purchase more than US$ 3 Bn of advanced American military equipment, including Apache & MH-60 Romeo Helicopters - finest in the world. These will enhance our joint defence capabilities,"

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump says, "Melania and I have been awed by the majesty of India and the exceptional generosity and kindness of the Indian people. We will always remember the magnificent welcome the citizens of your home state (of PM Modi) showed us upon arrival."

"President Trump and I have met five times over the last 8 months. We are elevating our relationship to Comprehensive global strategic partnership level. We are increasing our cooperation in homeland security. We have decided to increase our efforts to fight terror to fight organised crime, drugs, narcotics cooperation will be stepped up."

People were there maybe more for you (PM Modi) than for me. 125 thousand people were inside. Every time I mentioned you, they cheered more. People love you here."

Melania Trump has reached Delhi school and the students are welcoming her with aarti and flowers. 

US President Donald Trump left a visitor's note at Rajghat. In the note, dubbed his visit as "tremendous honour", hailing the vision of Mahatma Gandhi.
